Men's Work
Individual & Group Psychotherapy

Therapeutic approach meant to address the unique challenges of men and masculinity in our society.

One of the pressing challenges of our time is the changing roles of men in our society. A welcome and positive development has been the growing egalitarian dynamic with women across domains from the workforce to education. In many ways we have deconstructed the antiquated power differentials that served as oppressive structures. While we still live in a patriarchal society, the critiques of this paradigm have led to the overlooking of detrimental conditions endemic to men and boys. Early diagnosis of ADHD, onset of substance use disorder, rates of incarceration, suicide, overdose are all higher amongst men and boys.

Further, meaning-making and purpose, and an inner sense of accomplishment have been diminished in the context of increasing social isolation. Some of the central relationships that have historically been available to provide meaning and purpose have eroded. Rates of deep friendships, dating, marriage and child rearing are all on the decline, more so though amongst men. We believe that these conditions are challenges, but ultimately opportunities that if taken courageously can awaken us to a more fully integrated and effective version of who and what we can be.

Our approach to men's work is two fold. First, individual psychotherapy that aims to improve emotional intelligence and social functioning. Often we first address anxiety, depression or relationship issues. Then we set out to accomplish personal goals by connecting with values, mission, vision and purpose. Second, we facilitate weekly mens groups that bring like-minded men into conversation with each other. Something that is especially lacking in our society are spaces for men to support and be real and vulnerable with each other. These groups afford us that opportunity and are guided with exercises and topics from experienced therapists.

This therapy encompasses the study and practice of therapeutic interventions tailored to the unique psychological needs and sociocultural pressures experienced by men. Historically, this field has evolved from early 20th-century psychoanalytic theories, which often neglected men's emotional expression, to contemporary approaches that incorporate mythopoetic and spiritual structures. These modern approaches emphasize fostering self-awareness, emotional intelligence, and healthy coping mechanisms, drawing on archetypal narratives and spiritual practices to help men navigate their inner landscapes and external relationships.
